It was a great first day at AWG 2026! Although the Opening Ceremony wasn’t until 7:30, events started as early as 8 AM. Futsal, Basketball, Hockey, and Curling all kicked off their competitions.
Futsal was the first sport to start. In U16 Futsal, three games were played for male and female. For the females, Northwest Territories beat Yukon in a shut out 3-0. Sapmi won against Alaska in a 6-1 victory, and Nunavut lost to Alberta North with 2 points to their 6. In U16 males, Sapmi beat Alberta North in a 4-0 shut out. Nunavut won 2-1 against Alaska. Yukon and Northwest Territories tied at 3 points each.
Hockey was the next sport to compete. In U15 male, Yukon and Alaska tied with 4 points each. In U18 male, Northwest Territories beat Nunavut 8-1 and Alaska beat Yukon 4-3. Finally, in U19 female, Alberta North won out against Nunavut 8-5.
In basketball, U19 female, Team Yukon won in a landslide against Team Alaska in a 97-11 victory. In the U19 male game, Team Northwest Territories squeaked out a victory against Team Alberta North in a 92-91 finish.
Finally, in Curling, U18 female, game 1 saw Team Alaska win against Nunavut 14-1 and in game 2, Northwest Territories beat Yukon 10-3. In U18 male, game 1 was extremely close at 6-5 Alberta North versus Yukon. Game 2 was also riveting with Northwest Territories at 12 points and Alaska at 4.
Tomorrow is a much busier day here in the Yukon with nearly every sport competing. First off is Hockey at 8:30 AM. In the 9:00 hour, Arctic Sports, Badminton, Basketball, Curling, Fustal, Table Tennis, and Wrestling. Between 10 and 11, Biathlon (Snowshoe), Dene Games, Hockey, Snowshoe, and Volleyball compete. Alpine Ski is at 11:10. Crosscountry Skiing is at noon, Snowboarding is at 12:30. The day finishes off with Speed Skating at 14:00 and Biathalon (ski) at 14:30.
